The daily commute
Since work is about a ten or fifteen minute walk from the ashram it is super convenient and it means we can avoid the traffic on Aurobindo Marg, which can be pretty intense. Delhi seems to be organized around high traffic volume arterial roads with very local, and often walled, enclaves or neighbourhoods in between. The arterial roads are one of the things that makes the city not very pedestrian friendly. That and the fact that the it is so huge. I'm constantly being surprised by how far away things are when they seem so close together on the map. Anyway, the office is located in Kalu Serai if you want to look it up. Here's a view of our neighbourhood.
On the way we usually stop at the fruit stand.
This is the local watering hole.
Turn left at the Bhai Mandir ruins.
This is the phone booth. Sorry it's rotated
And the local tailor's shop.
Typical streets and shops
THe local garbage facility. One thing I have never seen here is a garbage truck. From what I can tell, people bring their rubbish to the nearest bin like this - or in some places they have a larger and more permanent 3-sided enclosure - and drop it off. Then some poor (and I mean poor) people sort through it all by hand to separate out whatever is useful or re-usable. Don't let me ever complain about garbage collection in Toronto again.
And finally, the donkey sanctuary next door to the office.
That's the neighbourhood.
